These cars cover a lot of kilometres as family cars and therefore turn up most often as damaged vehicles. Check whether the third row of seats is present, because that option makes a difference to the resale value.
If you cover a lot of motorway kilometres, a diesel is the obvious choice. The 200 d delivers 150 hp and the 220 d 190 hp, always from the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder; the 220 d comes with 4MATIC as standard.
On these versions the exhaust aftertreatment deserves attention. Ask whether the particulate filter and the AdBlue system are working without faults, especially if the car has mainly been used for short journeys.
At the top is the AMG GLB 35: 306 hp, four-wheel drive and a more tightly tuned chassis. It runs on larger wheels and has its own bumpers, which makes repair after a collision more expensive than on an ordinary GLB.
There are far fewer of this version on the road, so it turns up here only occasionally. When it does, it is usually a young car with limited damage.
With the AMG version, bear in mind that the bumpers, the grille and the wheels are parts unique to this version. They do not fit an ordinary GLB and are therefore harder and more expensive to replace.

The GLB has flat panels and a tall, upright tailgate. That makes dents in the bodywork relatively easy to remove, but the bumpers contain parking sensors, radar and often a reversing camera. Those electronics make a seemingly minor collision expensive after all.
Ask whether the driver assistance systems still start up without error messages after the damage. A broken radar module behind the grille will not show up in a photo.
Also check the tailgate for fit. If it does not close evenly, the opening is distorted and there is more going on than just a dent in the panel.
Many GLBs were supplied as seven-seaters. Check that the third row of seats is complete and that the seat belts and latches are in order, because loose seat parts are difficult and expensive to reorder. The label is purely about money: the insurer estimates the repair costs to be higher than the car's market value at the time of the loss. With a family car that has been around for a few years, that market value is limited and the threshold is therefore quickly reached. That verdict says nothing about the technical condition.
Assess for each vehicle whether repair is viable or whether the value lies mainly in the individual parts: the engine, the automatic transmission, the complete interior or the third row of seats.
The chassis number opens up the car's damage history. Add to that the inspection reports from the insurer or a recognised repairer and, if the car has been used for business, the service book. With a complete file, re-registration and export to Belgium, Germany or Poland go a good deal more easily.
Finally, check that the vehicle register shows no block on the vehicle.
